Hello Bloggers!
This week I have been working on the group project that I previously mentioned in my last post. Alongside Evernote, this week the tool Google Docs with introduced to the assignment. Google Docs allows individuals to access, edit, create, and collaborate with documents. There are Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Using Google Docs is done through your G-mail account. This tool can be very useful and give people the opportunity to work remotely and access your documents from different locations. Rather than using a USB to store your documents, you can store them in your Google Drive cloud. To give you a deeper explanation, check out this video I watched this week, Google Docs in Plain English.
Obviously, there are many ways that you can use this tool both professionally and personally. Some ideas I have for using Google Docs for educational purposes that involve the collaboration aspect of the tool are:
- Google Docs collaborative assignment for ADED 1P32.
- Sharing lecture notes with classmates when it comes to studying.
- As a portal for teachers to share assignments or class notes with students.
Fortunately, Google Docs has been a part of my PLE ever since I started university. My week 2 PLE diagram already includes this great tool! I have Google Docs under the category of education/collaboration. However, I now also see Google Docs as an organization tool for all of my documents so I believe it can fall under that category as well! This tool will no doubt remain as part of my personal learning environment.
While on the topic of Google, throughout this week I've noticed that I am becoming irritated with the crazy amount of e-mails I am receiving from Google Alerts! When first exploring this tool I thought it was great. However, as the past couple weeks have past I have noticed I don't have a need for this tool. The limitation of having my e-mail overwhelmed is not worthwhile. Google Alerts will no longer be a part of building my PLE!
As I was lurking away on my Feedly, I found an article that I thought was really cool. It was about Leap Day! February 29th, the extra day we get to have every four years. It sounds exciting doesn't it? I never really gave this day any attention, other than thinking it was any other day but this article made me think different! This article takes a positive outlook on this day and urges your to take full advantage of it!

Hello Brooke,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog post and thoughts on Google Docs. It definitely is a great resource to have in your PLE. I like the connection you made suggesting that Google Docs can be classified under more than one category of your PLE illustrating the versatility of the tool.
Kind regards,
Amberley
Hi Brooke,
ReplyDeleteI also had Google Docs in my PLE from the start because of the efficiency of all the tools in the Google Drive. As I was reading Andrea's blog, she pointed out the fact that Google Docs' spellcheck is not as sensitive as Words', so I thought I would pass on the message as you appear to be a frequent user.
I also can relate to the irritability towards the Google Alerts. I have found that because it notifies you about everything pertaining to what you selected, I have been getting notifications too often.
Great post!
Hi Brooke,
ReplyDeleteYou note "When first exploring this tool I thought it was great. However, as the past couple weeks have past I have noticed I don't have a need for this tool. The limitation of having my e-mail overwhelmed is not worthwhile. Google Alerts will no longer be a part of building my PLE!"
Good analysis. Not everyone tools meets everyone's individual needs. The main thing is that you at east tried it.
Sheila
Hi Brooke,
ReplyDeleteYour post is a great read! I have not used Google Docs before this session and your post has just given me more insight to what I can do with it. For example, share notes with your classmates, because the worst thing is when your file is too large to send it over email so you would have to find another way. This is that other way!
Thanks,
Julia
